OK, maybe it’s not that nobody knows the five secrets to getting good grades, it’s just that nobody uses them. It’s simpler than you think to raise your grades and maintain a higher grade point average. You don’t have to be a genius or a bookworm to improve your grades substantially and maybe even hit the Dean’s list. The following tips will work for anyone. It doesn’t matter if your a freshman or a senior, in a huge university or a community college.

1. Attitude is everything
Go into your day completely believing that you’re about to give it your all. There is an old saying that goes “Can’t never could,” meaning if you go in with a “cant-do-it” attitude you’ll never accomplish anything. Be confident.

2. Never miss a class
This might seem like a no-brainer but you’d be surprised. Make a promise to yourself that you will not miss a class unless you have a fever of 105 degrees or are in the hospital. Drag yourself to class no matter how you feel or what disastrous thing has happened. Making a habit of this helps in more ways than one. Teachers love students that show up, it’s that simple. You can get attendance points that can make the difference in an A and a B. You also absorb the material so much better when you hear it first hand, listen to the questions and answers and then go home and read it.

3. Do your homework
Another no-brainer, right? Wrong. Students usually want to skip homework when it’s something like just reading material. Always do your homework, no matter what it is. They give it to you for a reason. There may be a pop quiz tomorrow. Even if you feel your familiar enough with the subject matter, do it anyway. It cant hurt.

4. Get organized
This one is important and can be the hard one for some students. Use a planner and write things down. Need to read three chapters for tomorrow? Write it down. Quiz on Thursday? Write it down. Have to turn in your thesis on Monday? Write it down. Its not always easy to be organized. Use a day planner or PDA. Keep each classes work separate and in it’s own place.

5. Take notes
There are things that the professor will say in class that aren’t in the text book. These are essential clues to knowing what will be on the tests and exams. Listen attentively to what is touched on in class and make note of it. When studying later rewrite your notes on your computer or just more legibly. Studies show that retention of material is directly related to rewriting it.

While doing all these things will definitely help you increase your grade point average, it’s still also important to maintain a good relationship with your professor and study consistently. Don’t be afraid to approach your professor for help or advice and make sure that you don’t cut your regular study time because your taking better notes. College is a multitasking environment and the more tasks you can juggle at once the better off you’ll be.

Ask anyone who graduated from college and they will tell you that they wish they knew a certain piece of insider information before they went to school. College is full of myths and half-truths. Here’s a list of the top five.

Myth 1: You don’’t have to know what you want to do until your junior year.
This myth has been perpetuated by counselors and academic advisors all throughout the country, on both the high school and university levels. Although it is true that you don’t need to choose a major until your junior year, you better have some clue about what you want to do before you say yes to that acceptance letter.

If you are an entering freshman, and you have absolutely no clue what major to choose, two years of taking general educations requirements will not magically bestow you with educational clarity. If anything, two years of multidisciplinary exposure will leave you with more questions than answers. Figure out what your goals are before you get to school. You can always change your mind, but if there are certain things that you know you want to experience (i.e. traveling aboard, taking an internship, creating your own major or combining different majors), then you’re more likely to accommodate these considerations if you know what you want to get out of school before you arrive.

Myth 2: You must to choose from a rigid set of majors and class schedules.
College is very customizable. If your major isn’t offered at your school of choice, then try to create it. If you want to take a course on 21st century terrorism, and the class doesn’t appear on the schedule, then make it up. Independent studies are awesome. If your proposed courses of study are approved (usually through the tacit support of a professor or academic advisor), then you can set your own curriculum. You read what you want, write what you want, and your only class time is face to face discussion sessions with your advising professor (usually during office hours). These tailor-made learning experiences can be very rewarding, because they can be created by you to suit your own personal academic interests.

Myth 3: College is one big party.
Sure you’re going to rage it up while you’re in school, but if you don’t get your stuff done, you won’t be partying for very long. Time management is extremely important in college. If you allot enough time for work, you’ll still have plenty of time to play. Just make sure you know when to say “not tonight, I have to cram.”

Myth 4: Living on campus is fun.
If you’re an incoming freshman, nothing sounds cooler than living on campus. You get to meet new people and you live just outside your classes. You can stumble out of bed and stroll into your lecture without a problem. If you have the opportunity to live off campus, do so. On campus living is overrated. You could be faced with the dreaded my-roommate-is-a-chump syndrome. If you want peace and quite, you might have to complain to your noisy neighbors. If you want to be noisy, you might have to deal with your complaining neighbors. Live with people who you like and respect, and live off campus. When you live off campus, you can immerse yourself in school when you need to and remove school from your living situation when it’s necessary.

Myth 5: College is too expensive.
College is by no means cheap, but there are endless opportunities for you to secure extra funds while going to school. Fill out FAFSA forms early and religiously. Apply for every grant you can. Exhaustively explore every scholarship option. If your mother’s second cousin was an Eskimo employed by the Coca-Cola Company, then there’s a scholarship out there waiting for you. Make a list of every category that you qualify for (race, class, gender, religious beliefs, athletic abilities, musical prowess, subject and career-specific interests, company-specific employment and so on), and apply for as much free money as you can.

College is an experience that is different for everyone. What’s true for one university may not be standard practice for another university, so make sure to do your research. Ask as many questions as you can before you commit to a particular institution or program. Talk to students past and present, schedule a visit and meet with professors before you decide on a particular school. The more informed you are, the better.

Organizations for Graduate Student
5 That Should Be Considered

Graduate students are busy people. They are busy with their coursework. They are busy with their research. They are busy with their thesis. And in some cases they are busy with their family and work life. It is important though that graduate students take time out of their busy schedules to become involved in organizations that will help them while they are graduate students and beyond. Colleges and universities have so many student organizations to choose from that it can be difficult to even narrow down organizations that may be most beneficial to a graduate student and their goals.

While this is definitely not an all inclusive list, here are 5 graduate organizations that students should consider becoming a part of to add to their graduate student experience to help shape and refine them as professionals. This list is no particular order.

#1 Part-Time MBA Association

This organization is dedicated to representing MBA students that go to school on a part-time basis. Students who are earning their MBA on a part-time basis have different concerns than those who are attending a full-time program. This organization acts as the liaison between the students and the college or university. As a member of this organization students are able to take part-time MBA student issues to the school of business administration and its faculty. This organization works for the good of the part-time student body to help improve the quality of the education that they receive, the amount and quality of academic support, and the professional services and advice that students can receive. By joining this group MBA students will find a sense of community among their peers, while continuously trying to improve student relations.

#2 MBA Association

The MBA Association’s goal is to provide a community where graduate students can interact through activities and services that allow their members to grow as students and as professionals in the business world. This group acts as a liaison between current students, Alumni and faculty to help students define their career goals, strengthen their skills, and develop a strong network of professional peers.

#3 Graduates As Parents

According to the Census Bureau the amount of graduate students attending college that are also parents increases by 60 percent each year. By becoming a member of this organization, graduate students will find a community of their peers that are balancing their family life with their school life. It also provides a place for students to interact with leaders in the organization and in the school to acquire and foster their leadership skills.

#5 Graduate Students in _____________ (insert specialization here)

Whatever the graduate student’s specialization is, they should also consider joining the graduate student association for their specialization. The goal of these organizations is to provide a community where graduate students specializing in a particular field can interact through activities and services that allow their members to grow as students and as professionals in their field. These groups also act as liaisons between current students, Alumni and faculty to help students define their career goals, strengthen their skills, and develop a strong network of professional peers.

A High school diploma is required for those students who wish to go on to college either at a junior college or university level. A high school diploma is also more favorable for those students who wish to enter the workforce after graduation, rather than not having a diploma at all. Students can earn their high school diploma in one of two ways: traditional classroom or distance learning.

One way that students can earn their high school diploma is by attending their local high school. This is probably the most common way that young adults today are earning their high school diploma. This method of education requires the students to attend scheduled classes and complete certain requirements, including passing grades, to earn their high school diploma. Classroom style learning is a great way for students to earn their high school diploma when they need face-to-face contact with teachers and their peers in order to facilitate the best learning environment for them.

Another option available for students to earn their high school diploma is through distance learning programs. Distance learning is better for those students who are self-motivated and do not need face-to-face contact with their teachers and peers in order to complete and pass their courses. There are two types of distance learning, which are correspondence courses and web based programs.

Correspondence courses for students to earn their high school diploma usually consist of printed materials in the form a text book and/or workbook that students use to complete their coursework. Correspondence courses require students to read and complete their assignments on their own and then email or mail them to their teachers to be graded. Since correspondence courses do not have a set schedule, students can usually advance through them at their own pace.

The other option for a distance learning program is a web based program. Students who wish to earn their high school diploma via a web based program will need to have access to a computer that is hooked up to the Internet. This type of program allows students to interact with their teachers in an online format either by email, online discussion groups or chat rooms. Students either receive their assignments via email or an online forum that the teacher sets up for students to access their assignments.

With a few different options available to choose from, students (and their parents) can now choose the best learning method for them to earn their high school diploma.
